How to Start Windows 7 in Safe Mode

Safe mode – If your computer is not performing as it should or if you can’t boot into Windows, safe mode is a good start for troubleshooting your issue.  Sometimes, viruses, crapware, software updates or device driver install may prevent your computer from working properly or booting into windows. If you need to restore Windows 7, and it won’t in normal mode, you can sometimes restore it from safe mode.  See How to Run System Restore in Windows 7.

  • If your computer is on, either Shut it down and turn it back on or restart your computer.

  • As soon as you turn on the computer, and you see your computer’s BootSplash Screen, Start to tap the F8 key on the keyboard repeatedly about once per second until you see the Advanced Boot Options Menu. (If you get a boot device menu, press ESC key on the keyboard, then continue pressing F8.)

  • If you pressed the F8 key in time before the Windows log came up, you will see the Advanced Boot Options Menu. (If not, restart the computer and try again.)

  • Select your desired Safe Mode. (If you need access to the internet to download drivers or anti-viral software, select Safe Mode with Networking.)

Next you’ll see the scary words screen…don’t worry, this is normal!

  • Windows may say, “Please Wait” and “Welcome”

  • Login to your user profile (If you have a password, or have more than one user file)

  • Now you should be in Windows 7 Safe Mode.
