Word of “Mouse”

THE WORKING MOUSE

We had the Working Mouse come to our house,
To teach us how the computer works.
She taught us all to completely install,
And didn’t make us feel like jerks.

She had a routine to make it seem,
That a computer was easy as pie.
She would just click here and soon would appear,
Answers that we’d passed by.

“Now don’t be afraid of any tirade,
That may appear on the screen!
Cause you are the boss and nothing is lost,
And it’s never as hopeless as it seems!”

When she finished her task, this clever young lass,
Used her laptop to record her lessons,
She would print off her sheet and be very discreet,
And everyone counted her blessings.

Danette, thank you so much for your help.  Everything works and so much faster!!   When we went to dinner I told everyone just how much I appreciated your coming over and how you fixed everything!!   They said that I must be talking about the Working Mouse and that they had you service their computers and just love you!  Anyway,  I am telling everyone about you and want you to know that you may use this as  a recommendation from a very highly satisfied customer.

I am one of the older type “Senior Citizens” who have been given any number of reasons why I shouldn’t bother buying a desk top computer. You’re too old to learn new things. You’re too set in your ways. You won’t use it. Modern technology has passed you by. etc. etc. Well, last  summer our two Grandsons, aged 14 and 16 respectively, visited us. Our daughter and son-in-law are, and have been, computer literate for a long time and have brought the two boys up living with “The Computer”. To make a long story short, the boys conned me into buying one. I assumed it was because they wanted to play games with it when they visited us during the summer. Well, I made the plunge and the kids spent a whole afternoon hooking the thing up before leaving for home back in Michigan. Wires were strung all over the bedroom which was designated as the temporary home for “the computer”, furniture was moved , pictures were taken down and the room was a mess. The boys’ parting words after they said, “Hey, we’re outta here”, were “Don’t worry, Gramps, it’ll work now, but you need to fix the wiring so it’ll look neater.”

The kids provided me with a lot of books on “How To” and I found them very useful as decorations to make people think I knew how to use the computer. Fortunately, a friend touted me on “The Working Mouse” so I contacted her to help me get off dead center. It didn’t take long to realize that she knew her business very well.

My learning curve started with basics, like moving the mouse around and finally getting to touch the keyboard without being bitten. She made it very easy and enjoyable to do. One by one, I was introduced to additional programs and functions, all of which I found fascinating. At last, I was ready for the big step called e-mail. My first message was sent to the two Grandsons about my progress, and to my delight, they were stunned at how much progress “Gramps” had made. Wow! e-mail no less.

As the tutorials progressed, I laid out a very basic and general plan to identify those programs which I could use on a daily basis. The “Working Mouse” very patiently guided me through all the left clicks, right clicks, double clicks, and no clicks on a program by program basis. She would document step-by-step the list of commands in sequential order which were necessary to do what I wanted to do. She encouraged me to practice these commands until they became more or less automatic. If I ran into a problem with a particular step, I could call her or I could wait until the next lesson and get a refresher.

I recently expanded my arsenal of equipment to include a digital camera and a scanner which opened an entire field of new applications. Guess what? The “Working Mouse” was there when I needed her. She knew what had to be done, how to do it, and most importantly, guided me through the maze of instructions which might as well have been written in Ancient San Scrit as far as I was concerned.

With her help, I have learned very effective ways to communicate with family, friends, and business associates. There is no more “telephone tag” which we have all run into. By the way, the former “bedroom” is now officially known as the “computer room”.

Thank you, “Working Mouse.”

P.S. Wait until those kids visit this summer.

The Working Mouse is cheerful, resourceful and extremely patient. She did a terrific job in a short time and didn’t make me feel inept about using my computer.  I think Brookings is fortunate to have someone of this caliber to actually come to your home and help you work through your computer problems.

  2. I am an Independent Medicare/sales consultant for a world recognized physician in Sandpoint Idaho. My position requires vast amounts of research and working with physicians and HIPAA requirements. I have been working with Danette, on a monthly basis, to ensure my computer is “clean” and up to date. She has been extremely helpful and patient as we work through the many obstacles that come up on a daily basis when the computer is your main source of research and communication. Due to her knowledge, I am no longer afraid every time I have to learn a new program or install a new device. There are no mistakes, because she does it right the first time. It is a pleasure to work with such a professional. I look forward to her visits, and I , for one, will continue to keep “The Working Mouse Working”. Thank you for all your help.
